Here at Florida A&M University (FAMU), we are excited to enter our third year of the Annual Pie Sale. This year, we look forward to raising funds for The American Cancer Society! We are raising funds by selling apple, pecan, and sweet potato pie. In addition to this, we are also selling New York-style cheesecake. Each year, we have increased our donation with your support. In 2017, we were able to donate $250 and we nearly doubled it by raising $470 the following year. This year, we look forward to increasing our sales with a mission to donate the proceeds to The American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society is national non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating cancer by fundraising to research, advocating, educating and serving the community and those affected by the disease. Since its founding in 1913 by Mr. John D. Rockefeller, it currently has over two million volunteers dedicating their time to advocating for cancer research and programs dedicated to problems associated with cancer. The name of The American Cancer Society was initially The American Society for the Control of Cancer as stated on wellnessjourneys.org. As a part of the organization’s advocacy, they are relied on by media to communicated up to date statistics and news concerning the progress of cancer research. Moreover, The American Cancer Society provides recommendations and guidelines to physicians to prevent early symptoms of cancer that could potentially save someone from being officially diagnosed with cancer.

In addition to partnering with The American Cancer Society for the third year in a row, we chose this non-profit organization as employees, friends, and families of Metz have been affected by cancer – specifically, breast cancer, which is one of the top five most common types of cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society carry the values of integrity, determination, diversity, courage, and compassion, which are similar to the values at Metz Culinary. This is one of many reasons we decided to donate our proceeds to this organization. All in all, we both Metz Culinary and The American Cancer Society are catering to the betterment of the community we serve.
